After owning the 20mm f/1.8 lens for over a month, I finally was able to get out with it. Usually I’m able to get out and start shooting after owning a lens for less than a week but it’s been crazy last month and this month. I was planning on getting out during Christmas break but ended up getting sick instead. It also didn’t help that there was no snow. Anyways, so far I have nothing but good things to say about this lens. I didn’t have much good subject matter to shoot but I did like the shots I was able to get. I would say that this is my new favorite lens and may spend more time on the camera than my 16-35mm lens will. I love the close focusing distance and being able to have such a shallow DoF for a wide angle is awesome.

As far as posting, I think I’ve got a schedule that works out nice. I think I might try to get back on the Monochrome Madness bandwagon too. I’ve decided to just post on the weekdays and take a break on the weekends. So far that seems to be working the best. Monday’s posts will be the One Four Challenge. Starting next week I’ll try to make Tuesday’s posts be Monochrome Madness. Then Wednesday through Friday will be whatever I have in store. Once I’m able to catch up a bit then Wednesday’s may turn into learning posts again.

    • Thanks Shannon! Actually more of a wide angle macro since it was taken with a 20mm lens. I’ve done a post on “Wide Angle Macro” shots in the past but now that I have this lens I’ll have to do a follow up post since I’ll be able to get more of those shots. The lens has a close focusing distance of about 7.8 inches so for this shot I still wasn’t as close as I could have gotten. If it wasn’t so windy I would have setup the tripod and gotten a closer photo.

        • Yes it does. At first I would always look only for larger subjects to incorporate into my landscape shots. Once I got into macro and wide angle macro then I started looking for smaller subjects as well. I’m hoping to incorporate many small subjects into an interesting landscape setting with this lens. Somewhat a bit of close up photos with more landscape in them than normal macro work. I’m also hoping to use this lens with astro photography since it is a f/1.8 lens. I think it’ll work nice for that.

    • Thanks Valerie! I’m glad that there was some blue sky at least, even if it was just for a bit. This day the clouds came rolling in quickly and before I knew it, the blue sky was gone. I’m glad I found this pod when I did too because the sun was shining on it and few minutes after I got the shot the sun decided to hide behind clouds the rest of the day.

    • Nikon just came out with this lens in September of last year so it’s only been out for about 4 months. From what I’ve read their past two 20mm f/2.8 lenses weren’t all that great so I didn’t want to get a copy of either one of those. Since I went full frame I’ve always wanted the 24mm f/1.4 lens but at about $2200 it’s a bit steep for me. I’d rather put that towards a D810 if I had it. So when I seen the 20mm f/1.8 lens pop up I started doing research on it. I also took my 16-35mm lens and was shooting it at 20mm just to make sure I was happy with that focal length because I did have the 28mm f/1.8 lens but was not happy with the focal length. After doing that I decided that I was happy with 20mm. Another reason I wanted to get it was the close focusing distance of about 7.8 inches. I love doing close up wide angle shots and this lens works really well for that. After reading and watching a few reviews about the lens and nothing but good things were being said I knew for $800 it would be a great buy. I still had some DX lenses plus the 28mm that I never used so I decided to trade them in for a lens I knew I’d get much more use out of. On the upside, I don’t want the 24mm f/1.4 anymore.

      So to sum it up, I like the 20mm f/1.8 for it’s shallow DoF, close focusing distance, and the wide angle aspect on a full frame sensor.
