Frosted with Pollen

I really enjoyed shooting this flower. I couldn’t seem to get enough shots of it but had to stop at some point. I’ve still got a lot of photos to edit but having a hard time finding the time to do so. The pollen on this flower almost looks like frosting. The flowers have since died and are now gone though so I think it may be time to pick up a new batch and give them a go.

    • Thanks Laura! If anything I am very happy I decided to purchase that lens. Sometimes it may sit in my camera bag as my wide angle is being used, but then it’s on my camera every time there are small things to photograph. It’s nice to not need a “landscape” before my eyes in order to create something. All I need is a bouquet of flowers, some space on my kitchen floor, and my photography gear and I’m good to go. Oh, and for the kids to be in bed so they are not hovering over me getting in the way.

I’ve also recently got a cable to connect my camera to my phone and installed an app called DslrDashboard. It allows full control over the camera as well as focus intervals. I can set how much it focuses each time I go to the next “focus point” which will make it so much easier for focus stacking. It does have a focus stacking feature but so far in testing it doesn’t seem to work so great. But I plan on using that sometime in the future as I want to get back into focus stacking experimentation. With the flash it will be so much easier doing that in the field as long as there isn’t any wind.

Although I’m kind of wishing I would have waiting another month to go with the S6 to be able to control the shutter speed, but I still don’t know if I’ll get much use out of my camera phone anyways. I’m still not impressed with it but yet I’m comparing it to the D610 which is not really that fair. Anyways, DSLR Dashboard is available in the apple store. I don’t know if it costs anything though. It was free through Google’s Play store. But I do find that sometimes apps are free for android but you have to pay through apple. I don’t know why but that alone would make me not want an iPhone. You can connect to your camera either wireless or with a cable. The D750 has build in Wi-Fi so I don’t know if that would work or not. If you do go with a cable you’ll need to get an OTG adapter that connects to your phone. That’s what I did as the wireless adapter for my camera is $50 which I’m not wanting to pay right now. But for someone like you who has bad knees, I can see where this feature would be easier for shooting lower as you can just get your camera setup then set all your settings while standing up. It also shows the light meter so you know if you have your settings where you want. And it has a live histogram meter making it even easier. You can also view the shot on the phone after you take it to know if it looks how you want so you can make adjustments to the aperture if the DoF isn’t correct. I think it’ll be nice to use in the field for certain shots. I won’t need to lay down as much.

          • That’s for all this! Well except for your dislike of Apple! haha I’m an apple fan. But hey, variety is the spice of life right? šŸ™‚ I see the app is free for iPhone as well. http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Learn-And-Explore/Article/hr0rbbh0/using-your-nikon-camera-s-built-in-wi-fi.html I’ll have to look into all this because what I really want is to use my ipad to show the shot to my daughter first before I take it. Not only just setting up all the stuff and remotely operating it. I think it’s good for her to see what the shot might look like before I take it. I would imagine there is an ipad app or that it utilizes the iphone app which happens a lot. Thanks for all this great info Justin! How is baby Liam?

As for Liam, he seems to be crabby most of the time and wants to eat a lot. He is breastfed mostly but when we give him a bottle, we limit it to a little because if we give him as much as he wants, most of it comes back up. Not sure if the formula is upsetting his stomach or there are other issues. We are trying different formulas to try and find one that works for him. I never knew how much bad stuff was in formulas. Did you know that the gentle formulas have corn syrup?!?! That’s horrible! And as a first ingredient! I found some stuff called Hipp from Germany that seems to be the best you can get so ordered some of that. It should be here sometime next week so hopefully it works out nice. I’ve read a lot of good things about it. But I am looking forward to his 3-month shoot that I’ll be doing. Just got to think of some props to get. Other than the crabbiness and formula, he seems to sleep good at night, only getting up once or twice, and he’s got no other problems which is nice. It’ll get easier when he’s closer to 6 months. Out of the 3 though, he’s been the hardest to keep happy as a baby. Out first one didn’t prepare us for anything, she was always happy no matter what.

          • Corn syrup? UNREAL!! I couldn’t have formula at all when I was a baby. I wonder if there was corn syrup in it wayyyy back then lol. I hope Liam improves soon and that the new formula will help. I can imagine everyone is exhausted! Thanks again for all the info. šŸ™‚

    • Thanks Truels! I used to use my macro lens for more non-macro landscape shots and portraits, but with an external flash, it really helps with not having to use a slower shutter speed in low light conditions. I’ve been using it quite a bit more for flowers with the flash as I’m able to get results I’m happier with. Hope you have fun!

  1. Just FYI…I downloadedn the QDslr and ordered a wireless adapter. I don’t want to deal with a cable because who knows if apple will come up with yet another connection lol. I’ll let you know how I like it once I receive the adapter and have tried it. Thanks so much for the tip on that app!

      • O-M-G!!! I love it Justin! It’s so easy. My camera shows up under my wifi settings as a device so I just click it and voila. I love how you can control SO much from the ipad. It’s amazing! I haven’t played with it too much but I also love how the pictures download to the ipad. Way cool. Thanks again for giving me the heads up!

        • No problem. I’ve also found other apps that are photography related that I like so far. Sometime I’ll do a post about them. The only thing is that they are all for android and I don’t know if there are iOS versions for every one. Wouldn’t it be nice if they were able to just make one app that would work on all devices, regardless if its apple or android? And now there’s windows phones thrown in the mix. I think it makes it tough on developers to need to develop a separate app for each. For web browsers it’s a one size fits all model, but not for mobile devices.

          • That’s the first app I got. I’ve also got an app that shows position and trajectory of the sun and moon at any given date and time. One that shows what the moon will look like for any date. One that shows the northern lights. One that shows a prediction of the weather and cloud formations 24 hours in advance so I know if it’s worth trying to get a sunrise/sunset or not. And one that shows me the position of the stars. I also have a couple backpacking apps for hiking on trails but you need to purchase the more detailed maps that can be used ‘offline’ that also include private/public land borders along with who owns the land. Those are purchased by state. But all of these apps are in the name of photography. šŸ™‚

Now I just need an app that shows all the spots worth photographing that also works as a GPS with turn by turn directions to get me there. I’ve searched for one but haven’t found any yet.

    • Thanks Sarah! I’ve got plenty of photos with this flower. Some with water and some without at different angles and focal lengths. Not sure when I’ll get them posted though. I’m having some problems accessing the site on my laptop so I’m unable to load any photos at the moment.

        • I tried on both Firefox and Chrome but doesn’t seem to load up. It just keeps spinning like the site is stuck. I’m thinking it’s my internet and not really the browser. But no other sites have any problems so I don’t really know. Haven’t really had the time to look into it further.

The little one is doing good. Wakes up once during the night still. He always wants to be held though but that will get better with time. Once he’s able to keep his head up on his own and becomes more active then he’ll play with toys and stuff a little more.

          • I think those early months when they want to be held close are precious, even if it’s 3am and you’re half asleep!! Great he’s still in a good pattern šŸ™‚ It’s odd that other sites are ok but not WP! I wonder if anyone else is having problems? Worth sending them a bug report!
